{"id":234,"date":"2018-11-15T10:27:29","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T17:27:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.quixotes.org\/kaizen\/?page_id=234"},"modified":"2019-08-25T08:40:35","modified_gmt":"2019-08-25T15:40:35","slug":"activities-for-practice-associations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.quixotes.org\/kaizen\/lessons\/activities-for-practice-associations\/","title":{"rendered":"Activities for Practice:  Associations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><span style=\"color: #1930ba;\">(excerpted and adapted from <em>Tutoring ESL: A Handbook for Volunteers<\/em> pages 132 and 133)<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.quixotes.org\/kaizen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Practice-associations.doc\">MS Word .doc version (39 kb)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Purpose:<\/strong> Creative use of language; using language to explain reasoning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong> A variety of objects or models of objects.<\/p>\n<h4>Directions<\/h4>\n<p>Show your student four to six different examples of kinds of items, such as:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">clothing (nurse&#8217;s cap, necktie, fur stole, bolo tie, sun hat, bandanna)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">sports (running shoes, skis, tennis racket)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">media (actual or model of camera, radio, television, tape recorder, CD player, etc.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">transportation (actual or model of bicycle, motor scooter, luxury car, farm truck, van, sports car)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">housing (model of apartment house, farm house, log cabin, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Ask your student questions that will orient her to the items, e.g.:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Which is the cheapest?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Which would be best for a family?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Which ones are used for work?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Which ones are used for recreation?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What kind of person would use this?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">All answers are occasions for discussing different points of view and for sharing information, for example: &#8220;In the country you come from only the poor people smoked cigars?&#8221; &#8220;Some Americans think it&#8217;s not respectable to ride motorcycles,&#8221; etc.<\/p>\n<p>The objects are the beginning point and initial focus for your conversation, but the end point is the sharing of experiences and view points, so don&#8217;t feel that you can&#8217;t move outside the subject or boundaries of the objects.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to follow-up your student&#8217;s statements with questions to keep her talking.<\/p>\n<p>From <em>Tutoring ESL: A Handbook for Volunteers<\/em>.
